“Their voices were the loudest voices in the room. I found that it was more important for me to listen to their thoughts, their ideas, and their experiences… than it was for me to tell them anything.”
The lovely Lois Harris, our group program director at the Center, reflects on her experiences with grieving children. When she transitioned from a career in teaching to a career in children’s grief support, she discovered that she had to “flip the script” on her approach toward children and teens. Instead of instructing and leading them toward specific goals, she learned that it was much more important to listen to what they had to say. “I was no longer the teacher. They were my teachers, and they continue to be to this day.”
