School Support Group Services
“Support groups provide a warm, sheltered environment in which bereaved children and teens can mourn. Feelings understood by their peers and effective adult leaders bring down barriers between the bereaved child and the world outside. Support groups foster the experience of trusting and being trusted and have the potential of doing wonders in meeting the needs of bereaved children.”
Alan Wolfelt, PhD, Healing the Bereaved Child
The Center for Loss and Bereavement is committed to strengthening resilience for students, families, and school personnel impacted by loss. In PA, 1 in 11 youth will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18. For those of school age, it can affect academic progress, social and emotional development, and produce behavioral responses which may interrupt the ability to fully function successfully within a school environment.
In addition to on-site counseling and group services, the Center strives to expand support to our community by bringing off-site programming to the school environment. Whether a single event or a weekly support group, our staff brings specialized knowledge and experience of working with grieving youth to offer a program of support, tailored to meet the needs of this specific population.
